The global initiative Smart City is based on sharing ideas to solve urban challenges, and in collaboration with stakeholders from private and academy sectors, citizens and city government, find the best way and resources to solve existing challenges and create tangible solutions.

This €420,000 project is headed up by Hrvatski Telekom who rolled out smart parking in Dubrovnik, setting up 1,900 sensors allowing drivers to find available parking spaces and reducing associated traffic jams.

The Dubrovnik smart parking project is a collaboration between the City of Dubrovnik and the utility company Sanitat Dubrovnik d.o.o. to roll out smart parking in the city. The project was achieved through funding from Hrvatski Telekom who opened it up to tender. The project is part of a range of activities under the umbrella “Dubrovnik Smart City” project, stemming from the “Strategy of Smart City Dubrovnik”, a strategic document which the city used to developed their smart city.

Partners of Hrvatski Telekom were Mobilisis, manufacturers of smart sensors for vehicle detection and traffic patterns, as well as the Internet of Things (IoT) sensor platform, Profico, who created a mobile application for citizens, and Furia, which enabled installation and activation of field sensors.

“Even in technologically advanced countries, there is no such a comprehensive project of smart parking realized on the most modern NB-IoT network whose experience we could follow. So, we believe many will follow ours. Hrvatski Telekom is strategically oriented toward the construction of smart cities and their digital transformation, which includes the use of modern technologies to increase the quality of life of citizens, optimize local resources, and develop entrepreneurship,” pointed out Saša Kramar, Member of the HT Management Board and Chief Operating Officer Business.

Sensors are installed at each of the cities parking space allowing the system to accurately detect when a space is free or not, the data is sent to a central location and drivers are able to access the information through a free app. The Dubrovnik project is one of the largest integrated solutions for smart parking on the Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) network in the world and the largest project in the segment of smart cities in Croatia.

In the cities parking hot spots, a system of twenty public information displays was set up to allow drivers who don’t use the app can see real-time parking spaces.

The NB-IoT network from Hrvatski Telekom allowed the project’s sensors to be more efficient and cost-effective, and as a result, increasing the projects sustainable and future-proofing. This network is based on the global industry standard for mobile networks and enables the connection of an extremely high number of connected IoT devices. It features excellent coverage, low cost, high signal quality, and a high level of security and reliability in line with global telecommunications standards in mobile networks.

The smart parking project allows drivers to park quicker, cheaper, reduces fuel consumption as well as reducing congestion on the roads and their stress levels!

Nice one. The tech partner here is the national telecom. They cannot be a partner for countries around the world. Is there any information who was the technology solution provider, they usually are smaller companies as subcontractors of Telekom.

Sure. Partners of Hrvatski Telekom in the deployment were Mobilisis, manufacturer of sensors for vehicle detection and displays for traffic participants and IoT sensor platform, Profico, which was responsible for creating a mobile application for citizens, and Furia, which enabled installation and activation of field sensors.
